Your GPA is likely higher GPA than of students. If you were in a group of 10 students, you would likely have a higher GPA than of them.

How is my GPA calculated?

Your GPA is calculated based on your current grades (from Planner), using the University of Otago GPA Guidelines.

Your Percentile

Your Percentile is a visual representation of your GPA compared to other students. It is an approximate guide based on average student GPA distribution across a normal curve.

The Fine Print

The GPA calculator and normal curve visualization are just a guide, and are not to be taken as gospel! It is based on your GPA and the University of Otago average GPA and normal distribution (obtained by OIA). They are intended to be a helpful reference point and I encourage you to consult with your uni for accurate and comprehensive GPA information.

Your Score

Your Score is calculated based on your current grades (from Planner), using the University of Otago HSFY Admission Scoring Criteria. This uses your highest scoring 7 papers to calculate an average score (based on grade percentages, not grade points). The only papers considered by the algorithm are HUBS191, CELS191, PHSI191, CHEM191, BIOC192, HUBS192, POPH192/PUBH192 and one 8th paper taken in the second semester of your first year of study. Note that this score DOES NOT take into account UCAT scores or other factors that may affect your application.

Minimum Score

Minimum Score is the lowest GPA that was accepted into the programme (e.g. Medicine, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, etc.) you have selected via the subcategory that you have selected (e.g. General, Māori, NZRIPO, etc.) in 2023 (based on OIA information).

Mean Score

Mean Score is the average GPA of students who were accepted into the programme (e.g. Medicine, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, etc.) you have selected via the subcategory that you have selected (e.g. General, Māori, NZRIPO, etc.) in 2023 (based on OIA information).

This GPA calculator is provided for informational purposes only and should not be considered as an official representation of your actual GPA. Please note that the accuracy of the calculated GPA depends on the accuracy of the data entered. It is essential to verify your official grades for precise GPA calculations. Your score may be lower than expected if you have not completed 3 years of study, due to the weighting placed on 200 and 300-level papers.

Your Weighted GPA

Your Weighted GPA is a weighted GPA calculated based on your current grades (from Planner), using the following criteria. To see how your score is calculated an verify the numbers, scroll down further to see a customised breakdown table of your papers, grades and scores.

o Best scoring (maximum of) 120 points at 300-level
o Best scoring of 200-level and 100-level papers to 360 points
o With 100-level papers weighted x 0.5, 200-level papers weighted x 1.0, and 300-level papers weighted x 1.5

If you have added any 400 or 500-level papers to Planner, the formula will automatically update to use the appropriate scoring system.

For example...

If you have completed 400-level papers: o Best scoring (maximum of) 120 points at 400-level
o Best scoring (maximum of) 120 points at 300-level
o Best scoring of 200-level and 100-level papers to 480 points
o With 100-level papers weighted x 0.5, 200-level papers weighted x 0.8, 300-level papers weighted x 1.2, 400-level papers weighted x 1.5

If you have completed 500-level papers: o Best scoring (maximum of) 120 points at 500-level
o Best scoring (maximum of) 120 points at 400-level
o Best scoring (maximum of) 120 points at 300-level
o Best scoring of 200-level and 100-level papers to 600 points
o With 100-level papers weighted x 0.5, 200-level papers weighted x 0.75, 300-level papers weighted x 1.0, 400-level papers weighted x 1.25, 500-level papers weighted x 1.5

For more information, see the official guidelines at the UoO Medicine Admission Guidelines page or contact the University of Otago.

Papers Used

Below is a table of the papers and points used in calculation of your weighted GPA.

Minimum Score

Minimum Score is the lowest GPA that was accepted into the programme you have selected via the subcategory that you have selected in 2023 (based on OIA information).

Your Standard GPA is calculated based on your current grades (from My Papers). If you have not yet completed all 200 and 300-level papers, this may give a better indication of your progress than your weighted GPA. If you have completed more than 360 points, or have taken a large number of 200 and 300-level papers, your weighted GPA may be much higher than your standard GPA due to the weighting placed on 200 and 300-level papers.

Entrance GPA is the approximate lowest GPA that was accepted into the University of Otago Graduate Medicine programme in the previous year, according to OIA requests made to the University of Otago.

If the GPA shows as 'NEI' (Not Enough Information), this means that there were less than five people who successfully applied to this course under the subcategory you selected in the last year of applications. As a result, the university has withheld their entrance scores to maintain the privacy of these individuals.

The Fine Print

This GPA calculator is provided for informational purposes only and should not be considered as an official representation of your actual GPA. The calculator utilizes a weighted GPA algorithm based on the university guidelines, but it may not reflect the precise calculations used by the university.

Please note that the accuracy of the calculated GPA depends on the accuracy of the data entered. It is essential to verify your official grades and consult with your academic advisor or institution for precise GPA calculations.

We recommend using this calculator as a helpful reference point and encourage you to check both GPA and weighted scores with the university administration.

Your Score is calculated based on your current grades (from My Papers) - for entrance under the First Year Applicant category, your standard GPA is used.

Minimum Score is the lowest GPA that was accepted into the programme you have selected via the subcategory that you have selected in 2023 (based on OIA information).

Mean Score is the average GPA of students who were accepted into the programme you have selected via the subcategory that you have selected in 2023 (based on OIA information).

NEI or N/A
If the GPA shows as 'NEI' (Not Enough Information), this means that there were less than five people who applied to this programme via this category and subcategory in 2023, so the university has withheld their GPA for privary reasons. If the GPA shows as 'N/A' (Not Applicable), this means that this programme does not use the subcategory you have selected for entrance. Switch to the 'General' subcategory to see the GPA for the general category.

PLEASE NOTE: The minimum score for entrance to Second Year Law is currently not clear due to conflicting information from past OIA requests. There is currently a new OIA request in progress to clarify this. In the mean time, take the minimum score with a grain of salt.

Your Score

Your Score is your Legal System (LAWS101) mark. For a successful application, you also must have reached a threshold standard of at least a B- average in your best non-law papers worth 72 points (which is normally four papers), or equivalent. This scoring only applies if this was your first year of university study and you passed The Legal System at the University of Otago. Other factors may be considered, see the University of Otago Entry into second-year Law website for more information.
